Grade 5 and 6 HASS – Anzac Heroes– World War 2- Weary Dunlop
Year level: Five and Six
"He used what he could to protect and to heal,
if it meant endangering himself or giving away a meal.
Weary would rise and stand up for his men,
and be punished and beaten for his mild acumen."
Weary Dunlop was an incredible soldier in the Second World War who epitomised the Anzac spirit showing amazing courage, strength and compassion in extremely difficult conditions as a prisoner of war working on the Thai-Burma Railway. Faced with horrific conditions Weary worked tirelessly to provide medical treatment to the men he was imprisoned with often at great risk to his own safety.
Students will get to know Weary, and learn of his courage, by reading the moving poem “Weary Dunlop” and completing the fun, hands-on activities that accompany it.
